History of Car 79

In 1988, the department obtained a surplus cruiser from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office to be used for the purpose of Rapid Response.  Being a former police cruiser, it arrived painted in the Light Blue and White colors that the Sheriff's Office at one time used.

After a paint job, and some other minor changes, it was placed in-service as Car 79 and given the nickname "Thumper."

This unit served until Utility 79 was purchased in 1995.  The unit designation Car 79 was not used until 2011 when the Ford Expedition was placed in-service.
