History of Ambulance 799
Originally Ambulance 79
In 1975, when the Third and Sixth District Rescue Squad separated into the Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad and Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad, the fleet was divided between these new organizations. Hollywood's first ambulances consisted of a 1969 Cadillac Ambulance (see the Ambulance 798 page for more information on that unit) and a 1974 Dodge Van. The Dodge was identified as Ambulance 79. This unit served us until 1984.
In 1986, the 1974 Dodge was replaced with a Ford E-350/Horton Type III Ambulance. This unit was also designated Ambulance 79 until February 15, 1986, when St. Mary's County Rescue Squad Ambulances were identified with 3 digits, and this unit became Ambulance 799.
With the year 1991, Ambulance 799 was replaced in an order for two new Ambulances. The new Ambulances were Ford E-350/Medtec. This Ambulance 799 served until 2003.
Ambulance 799 was sent to Lifestar Rescue in 2003 for a process known as a "remount." During this process, the ambulance body (the box) is removed from its cab and chassis and mounted on a brand new cab and chassis. Our 1991 Medtec body was mounted on a 2003 Ford E-450 chassis. At this time, the Ambulance was also repainted to our white/green/gold markings and the body was upgraded with a modern lighting package and sirens. This Ambulance served as 799 until 2013, when it was replaced with a 2013 Freightliner M2/Wheeled Coach Ambulance
